Drama in the Lana Del Rey Fan Club
Chaotic fan drama in front of our Lord and Saviour Lana Del Rey

I stand on a campsite, gazing out at the landscape, with my beloved behind me as I utter, “ I wish I knew how to quit you.” My beloved being Lana Del Rey. That’s actually a scene from Brokeback Mountain, but you get what I’m trying to convey; I’ve tried to quit Lana multiple times but I always end up crawling back, flower crown in hand.
Me and Lana have had a lot of good times together. Listening to Honeymoon at the beach while eating soft cheese. Singing Off to the Races at karaoke. Keeping Video Games on repeat since I discovered her on Tumblr in 2011. Watching her choreography for Cherry at Rogers Arena, where I cried as soon as she said the opening lines to Norman fucking Rockwell. Playing Radio after I got the first payment for my comedy album. But being a Lana Del Rey fan is a solitary life. I hardly know any others. People say it’s too slow, it’s too sad. Well. Lana has a song about how without sadness you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the beauty in life. Maybe you should listen to it.😒
But being a Lana Del Rey fan is embarrassing.
I think it’s because her music is like reading a teenagers diary, a teenager who is definitely excelling in English class and writes poetry while in gym class. Her songs are full of Nabokov-ish descriptions, but with a hyper feminine spin. She also has a chaotic public image where she says too much and often makes herself look like a bad guy in the media.
I have a theory that a lot people like Lana Del Rey but they’re quiet about their love for her, like a secret they’re keeping from their friends. Because once your friends find out you love Lana Del Rey they might question your taste or your mental state. I, on the other hand, will love Lana until my dying day, so you better play Ultraviolence when I’m on my deathbed.
For this reason I joined a Lana Del Rey fan club on Facebook in mid-2019.
I mostly followed to see videos of Lana’s tour at the time and for niche memes.
Before the pandemic the page was posted on constantly and after a while I started to notice certain fans and their dynamic with each other. One fan in particular: Brazil.
Brazil’s posts are usually an image of himself as Lana with one of her lyrics. These posts are innocent, a fan seeking attention while worshipping Lana. But the longer I was in the fan club I discovered that these posts, while amusing others, were rubbing some fans the wrong way. Brazil’s number one hater being a fan named Jorge.
In a post since deleted, there was an uproar! Do we outst Brazil from the group? The post got out of hand with everyone arguing. Half the group wanted to keep him and half the group wanted him out. I had to make a decision so I creeped Brazil’s facebook page and I discovered that he didn’t have many friends. I realised that the Lana Del Rey fan club was probably all Brazil had. Why should we get to take that away from him? So I voted to keep Brazil and he remains in the group to this day, though his posts have been very sporadic ever since all the drama went down.
Here are some classic Brazil posts that delighted and enraged the group:
Even though Brazil still has his haters, he is beloved by many.
The Lana Del Rey fan club isn’t a happening place anymore due to the pandemic, even though Lana released two albums within a year.🤨 I am looking to make more friends who love Lana Del Rey so I made this Lana Del Rey fan club playlist with all my favourite songs from each album. Join me? 😈
